| Resumo | Using the National Centers for Environmental Predictions (NCEP) reanalysis data, this study evaluates the upper levels tropospheric circulation features during the austral summer (November, December, January and February) over South America and vicinities. Emphasis is given to the variability of the Bolivian Anticyclonic Circulation (AB), the Upper-levels Ciclonic Vortex (VCAN) in the vicinity of the northeastern Brazil (NE), and the inter-hemispheric bifurcation along the equator, near to the west coast of South America. It is found that during January and February the VCAN, instead of a trough, is one of the climatological features in that region. The pattern of the vertical motions at 300 hPa suggests that the typical convective activity, observed to the west of the VCAN’s, is reinforced by the upper-levels divergence in the transition zone of the AB and VCAN system. Also, the vertical motion pattern suggests that along the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (ZCAS) the convective activity over land is stronger than over oceanic areas. |
